Recent Updates from Las Cascadas Lodge

Over the past month we’ve had a great run of small group stays at Las Cascadas Lodge, with guests enjoying excellent birding and some fantastic Waterfall Descents tours in the surrounding jungle. We’ve also made a couple of practical upgrades around the property, including the installation of a new backup generator system and Starlink internet, improving both reliability and connectivity at the lodge. With Semana Santa just around the corner, the rainforest is especially lush and active, making it a wonderful time to visit and experience Pico Bonito and the Cangrejal Valley.

What Bird Is This?

Black-crowned Tityra (viewed February 2026)
Handsome, mostly silvery gray bird of tropical lowland forest and adjacent semi-open areas with taller trees. Usually found at mid-upper levels of fruiting trees, sometimes in small groups that mix readily with the commoner Masked Tityra. Black-crowned is told from slightly larger Masked by its solidly black bill.
