A Private Rainforest Retreat: Winter Adventures at Las Cascadas Lodge

This past week, we welcomed a wonderful couple to Las Cascadas Lodge for a romantic three-night retreat—an escape designed around privacy, adventure, and the natural beauty of Pico Bonito National Park. Winter is one of our favorite times at the lodge, and their stay showcased exactly why.

During their visit, they enjoyed exclusive, private tours, beginning with our guided hike deep into Pico Bonito. This trail offers a true immersion into the Honduran rainforest: lush greenery, vibrant tropical sounds, and endless views that shift with every turn. With one of our expert guides leading the way, the hike became a quiet and personal experience meant only for them.

Their adventure continued with a half-day Waterfall Descents (canyoning) tour—one of our signature activities. Two dedicated guides accompanied them through waterfalls, pools, and jungle canyons, capturing incredible photos along the way. The images from both tours highlight exactly what makes this region so special: powerful cascades, untouched rainforest, and moments that feel both thrilling and peaceful all at once.

Back at the lodge, they stayed in the Bejuco Cabin, one of our most popular choices for couples. As always, Chef Olven prepared all meals privately for them, and all drinks were included throughout their stay. When you’re here, you never think about logistics—we take care of everything.

Even when the lodge has multiple guests, it always feels private. We operate on a reservation-only basis, and no one enters the property without confirmation and vetting. With more than 100 acres, jungle trails, and riverfront space, you always feel like the place is yours.

Winter in Honduras is a perfect escape from the cold up north. Our rainforest is especially lush and tropical at this time of year, and the trails are quiet and crowd-free. It’s also an exceptional season for birding. Dozens of species are active around the lodge, and we have several multi-day birding excursions scheduled over the next few months.

What Bird Is This?
Crested Caracara – Rio Cangrejal Sightings
The Crested Caracara is one of the most striking raptors you can encounter along the Rio Cangrejal. Often seen gliding low over the river or perched above open stretches of rainforest, this bold scavenger-hunter feeds on everything from snakes to small mammals and carrion. Guests rafting near Las Cascadas Lodge sometimes spot it patrolling the riverbanks, using its sharp eyesight and confident, almost eagle-like posture to search for prey. It’s a remarkable species to observe in the wild and a memorable addition to any birding experience at the lodge.

If you’d like details on upcoming birding trips or are ready to plan your own private rainforest retreat, just let us know—we’d be happy to send you dates, availability, and options.
